Constable Shane Weinmeyer and Police Canine Dante
Oct 29, 2026

The Grande Prairie Police Service is proud to announce that Police Canine Dante and his handler, Constable Shane Weinmeyer, are now operational after successfully completing their certification and training, becoming GPPS' first police canine team.

Dante, a one-and-a-half-year-old Belgian Malinois and German Shepherd mix from the Czech Republic, joined the Grande Prairie Police Service earlier this year. Since then, he and Cst. Weinmeyer have undergone extensive training together in Calgary, where they completed their training and certification with the support of the Calgary Police Service Canine Unit, building the skills and partnership required to serve as a police service canine team.

"The addition of a police canine team significantly strengthens our ability to locate suspects, finding missing or vulnerable persons, and supporting critical incident response," says GPPS Chief Dwayne Lakusta. "Dante and Constable Weinmeyer have put in countless hours of training to reach this point, and we are proud to see them begin serving our community."

Police dogs are specially trained to assist officers in a variety of operational duties, including criminal apprehension, suspect tracking, evidence searches, and other specialized tasks. Working as a team, Dante and Cst. Weinmeyer provide an important resource that helps officers respond safely and effectively to incidents.

Residents may see Dante and Cst. Weinmeyer conducting training exercises throughout Grande Prairie. Training regularly takes place in residential neighbourhoods, commercial areas, industrial locations, parking lots, and other environments where the team may be called upon to work.

Training in real-world settings is an important part of maintaining operational readiness and ensuring the canine team remains familiar with the environments they may encounter while responding to calls for service. If members of the public see police canine training taking place in their neighbourhood or near local businesses, there is generally no cause for alarm.

Local businesses interested in supporting police canine training by allowing access to their properties are encouraged to contact the Grande Prairie Police Service at community@gppolice.com. Training scenarios are carefully planned and supervised, and these community partnerships help expose the team to a variety of real-world environments.

The Grande Prairie Police Service thanks the community for its support as it continues to develop this important policing capability.
