Grande Prairie Enforcement Services Peace Officers have noticed an increase in speeding vehicles throughout the city. Speeds of up to 119 km/h in a 60 km/h zone were recorded earlier this month on a single stretch of road on the west side of Grande Prairie.
While summer brings more people onto our streets, it also often brings an increase in speeding. Every time a driver chooses to exceed the speed limit, they reduce their ability to react to unexpected hazards and increase the risk of a serious collision.
“As speeds go up, braking distances increase and our field of vision is reduced,” says Peace Officer Sergeant Ryan Hoffman. “This ultimately puts all road users at risk”,
According to Alberta Transportation data, approximately one in four fatal collisions in our province involve unsafe speed. Whether driving across the city, heading out of town, or travelling for summer activities, slowing down can make all the difference in getting everyone home safely.
