Grande Prairie Enforcement Services is reminding motorists about Alberta’s rules around vehicle window tint, as many drivers may not be aware of what is and isn’t allowed.
In Alberta, tint is not permitted on the front windshield or the front driver and passenger windows. However, tint is allowed on rear side windows, as well as the rear window, if the vehicle has both left and right side mirrors. These requirements are set out in Alberta’s Vehicle Equipment Regulation.
“These rules are in place for safety,” says Peace Officer Sergeant Ryan Hoffman. “Clear visibility is essential for drivers to see pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles, particularly in low-light or poor weather conditions.”
Tint on front windows can reduce a driver’s ability to see clearly and can also make it harder for others, such as pedestrians or other drivers, to see and communicate with them.
Motorists who are unsure whether their vehicle complies are encouraged to check with Grande Prairie Enforcement Services before making any modifications to the original equipment specifications on their vehicles.
