Grande Prairie Enforcement Services is relaunching its Automated Traffic Enforcement (ATE) program following the transition to an in-house service model.
Previously delivered through a third-party contractor, the ATE program is now fully managed by Grande Prairie Enforcement Services. This change enhances local oversight and ensures alignment with the City of Grande Prairie’s broader traffic safety priorities.
Automated Traffic Enforcement is a component of the City’s Traffic Safety Plan and supports ongoing efforts to reduce speeding and improve safety for all road users. Enforcement will focus on higher-risk areas, including school zones, playground zones, and construction zones.
In 2025, a total of 7,687 speed violations were issued using ATE technology in school and playground zones, reinforcing the need for continued enforcement in areas where vulnerable road users are present.
“Traffic safety continues to be a priority in our community,” says Helen Napier, Enforcement Services Managing Director. “Automated Traffic Enforcement is one of several tools used to promote safer driving behaviour. Bringing this program in-house allows for greater oversight and ensures it is applied in a consistent and community-focused manner.”
ATE complements conventional enforcement conducted by Peace Officers by providing an additional method to address speeding and other traffic-related concerns. Deployment is guided by data and evidence-based practices, ensuring enforcement occurs in areas where it is most needed.
Grande Prairie Enforcement Services reminds drivers to obey posted speed limits and exercise caution, particularly in areas where children and other vulnerable road users are present.
